Chinese people have a tradition of giving apples as presents on Christmas Eve, because the Chinese words for “Christmas Eve” and “apple” sound similar. They are both pronounced as “ping” in Mandarin, which also means “peace”. So, giving an apple on Christmas Eve is a way of wishing someone a peaceful and safe new year. In my view, it’s a good way to hug foreign culture, neither totally denying nor fully accepting, especially when the ultra-nationalism is arising. Both the Yangtze River and the Yellow River shall not flow backwards.
