Mia's POV:
Buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!!!
The day started for Mia the same as it had for the past four weeks, with a loud blaring alarm, indicating the start of the day at Los Angeles County Jail.
As an experienced lawyer, she knew the importance of a good night’s rest before she had to appear in court. Sleep was essential in keeping the mind sharp, allowing her to respond to any of the prosecution's arguments and objections before they did any serious damage to her case. Unfortunately for her, sleep was hard to come by when your own life hung in the balance.
“Come on. Mia. You’ve got this! You’ve pushed through sleepless nights before. Just think of this like any of the dozens of other cases that you’ve worked on,” Mia muttered to herself.
She found her gaze listing up towards the dull, gray, hopeless ceiling of her jail cell, only to slap her face to keep her mind from being consumed by it all. Today was the first day of the trial that would define her future. If she won, she would be free of prison bars and free to hunt down the monster who murdered the man she’d loved. Free. If she lost…
… she tried not to think about what would happen if she lost.
Mia took a deep breath and hopped off the scratchy blankets of her cot, setting about smoothing out her black and white scrubs as the barred door of her cell was automatically opened. After the morning alarm buzzed through the jail, detainees had ten minutes to gather their wits and present themselves for roll call in front of their cells.
The heroic brunette attorney gathered her courage and strode out into the morose concrete hallway. Mia stood straight with her hands behind her back, waiting the same way as all the other detainees to be called by her name, ready to start another day. If everything went according to plan, it would be one of the last roll calls she’d ever have to suffer.
