First illustration: “Maternal Affection”
I finished reading the Suikoden manga last night, and I got confirmation that Tir’s father, Teo, entrusted Gremio to fill the role of both mother and father to Tir, since Tir’s mother passed away, and his father is always going off to war and could die in battle any day. I’m especially fond of Gremio’s “motherly” qualities. It’s all stereotypes, really. Cooking, cleaning, fretting about the boy’s choices and safety. Obviously a father can do these things just as well. I just find it really cute to think of Gremio as Tir’s male mom, rather than simply as a dad. I was happy that the last bonus pages in the manga acknowledged this by having Tir tell Gremio that he doesn’t remember his mom’s face, so when he tries to think of her, he just sees Gremio. Gremio was thrilled. <3 He’s proud to be Tir’s mommy. ^w^
I was going for a 90’s aesthetic, but I realized while drawing Tir’s face that it looks more 2002-2003, as I made him look suspiciously similar to Takao in Beyblade V Force or G Revolution. But I obviously adore that era, as that’s my favorite anime, so I certainly am not complaining about my art having similarities to 2002 Beyblade art! Gremio’s face reminds me of Kaori Yuki’s art in GodChild, so he has more of a 90’s look. Can you believe I still haven’t properly read that manga??
Second Illustration: “Gremio Giving Tir a Kiss on the Cheek”
Gremio giving his “young master” a kiss goodbye like a doting mother. <3 Painted with Marie’s watercolors on Canson cold pressed watercolor paper.
Third Illustration: “Protect”
I made the bizarre decision to color this with Poscas instead of my usual watercolors. The whole time I was coloring it, I was regretting my decision, because this medium is far from the soft 90’s manga aesthetic than I was going for. But now that it’s done, I think it looks pretty good! The colors aren’t exactly pastel, but I don’t think it looks too harsh. What do you think? The markers don’t allow for small, precise areas, so it was a bit tricky. I’ll get more small-point Poscas in the future. The hues that I have are very limited, and they aren’t exactly dilutable or mixable like watercolors. I can blend with another marker, but it doesn’t turn out evenly. It looks like Poscas make some colors that might serve me well in the future, so I’ll have to get some more.
