Between Scylla and Charybdis
그림 형제의 동화, 민담 같은 분위기를 좋아하여 이런 식의 그림들로도 참여해봅니다.
제대로 생각 안 하고 다 그려놓은 후에야 '....이거 바다 생물보단 그냥 바다 아닌가?'라던가 '...R-18에 아슬아슬한데?' 했던 그림이 꽤 있어서 아쉽네요.
만약 이 그림들도 수위 문제가 있다면 죄송합니다, 자체 검열을 열심히 했는데 아예 기준이 박살나서 고장난 상태인가 보네요..
평소에 잔혹동화, 민담 풍의 그림들을 모아두는 시리즈가 있어서 일러스트가 아닌 만화로 올렸는데 글과 그림을 동시에 보기 조금 불편한 점 죄송합니다

스킬라와 카리브디스는 그리스로마 신화 속 바다 괴물로 오디세이아에 등장한 걸로 유명합니다.
두 바다 괴물 중 하나를 선택해 돌파해야만 하는 오디세우스의 상황에서 따와 '스킬라와 카리브디스 사이'는 진퇴양난을 의미하는 관용구가 되었습니다.
원전의 스킬라는 긴 뱀의 목과 개의 머리를 6개 가진 괴물입니다. 이를 촉수로 여러 짐승의 머리를 뒤집어쓰고 조종하는 문어 괴물로 재해석해보았습니다.
늑대나 개의 머리를 위주로 그리는 도중 촉수 끝부분이 마치 개의 혀처럼 보이는 경우가 생겨 혀를 미끼로 의태해 물고기를 포식하는 악어거북의 머리를 정반대의 의태로 이용한다면 재미있을거 같아 머리 하나를 악어거북으로 변경하였습니다.
촉수 끝에 다른 생물의 머리를 달아 머리가 여럿인걸로 보이는 괴물이란 점은 몬스터 헌터 시리즈의 오스트가로아에서, 시체에 촉수를 밀어넣어 조종한다 라는 건 러브 데스 로봇 시리즈의 타나팟에서 레퍼런스를 따왔습니다. (타나팟이 인간도 비슷한 방식으로 조종하는 장면이 인상 깊었습니다)
* 횃불을 들고 있는건 어둠을 물리치는 수단으로서 쥐어준거였는데 생각해보니 원전에서 스킬라가 횃불 든 인간을 잡아먹는 장면이 있어서 묘한 장면이 되었네요
카리브디스는 물을 삼켜 배 자체를 삼키는 괴물로 평소 특유의 머리지느러미가 마음에 들었던 산갈치를 디자인적 모티브로 참고하며 입의 부위는 샌드웜, 그중에서도 듄 시리즈의 샤이 훌루드와 동시에 실존하는 수염고래들의 수염에서 레퍼런스를 참조하였습니다.

Scylla and Charybdis are sea monsters from Greco-Roman mythology, famously featured in the Odyssey.
In the story, Odysseus must choose to pass by one of the two, and from this situation comes the idiom "between Scylla and Charybdis," meaning a dilemma or being caught between two evils.
The original Scylla is a monster with long serpentine necks and six dog heads.
I reimagined her as an octopus-like creature wearing and controlling various beast heads on the ends of her tentacles.
I designed wolf or dog heads, but during the process, I noticed that the tips of the tentacles started to resemble dog tongues.
That gave me the idea of reversing the tongue-lure mimicry used by alligator snapping turtles, and so I replaced one of the heads with that of a snapping turtle.
The concept of attaching other animal heads to tentacle ends, making it appear to be a multi-headed monster, is inspired by Nakarkos from the Monster Hunter series.
The idea of inserting tentacles into corpses to control them comes from Love, Death & Robots’ episode featuring Thanapod, where I was particularly impressed by the scene where it manipulates humans in a similar manner.
* The torch held by the character was originally meant as a symbol of driving away darkness.
But amusingly enough, in the original myth, Scylla devours humans holding torches—making for an ironically eerie image.
Charybdis is a monster that swallows water and drags entire ships down with it.
For its design, I took inspiration from the oarfish, whose distinctive dorsal fin has always appealed to me.
The mouth area references sandworms, especially the Shai-Hulud from the Dune series, and also draws from the baleen of real-life baleen whales.
